Welcome back to our whirlwind guide to the biggest and brightest stars of the burlesque stage. Our featured queen this week is one of modern-day burlesque’s most famous faces. Noted for her performance art as well as her boundary-pushing burly numbers, this petite blonde bombshell holds the 2006 crowns for both the Miss Exotic World & Coney Island Pageants. She is the one and only Julie Atlas Muz.
Who is Julie Atlas Muz?
Based in New York, Julie Atlas Muz is one of the city’s most recognisable burlesque artistes. Since her arrival there in 1995, she has carved a very unique niche for herself in the world of performance, taking on acting and directing roles as well as stage performance. As a member of neo-burlesque royalty, she has appeared worldwide, including performances at some of the world’s biggest burlesque festivals. In 2009 she came to Scotland as part of the touring production ‘Mr Choade’s Wild Ride’, which tore up stages in Edinburgh and Glasgow with its scandalous show.
How did she get into burlesque?
Julie gained a degree in history and dance from Oberlin College before moving to New York to pursue a career as a choreographer. One day a friend offered her a slot in a burlesque show, and thus launched her career as a professional ecdysiast.
She is noted as being one of the original queens of the revival, alongside the likes of fellow New York burlesquers such as Dirty Martini & King of Boylesque, Tigger.
What style of burlesque does she perform?
On her own website, Julie Atlas Muz’s artist statement describes her work perfectly: “Through the power of dance I tell stories that are beautiful, political, and emotional, with a bold and theatrical irreverence. I use humor, positive sexuality, and glamour to address serious topics in a playful manner.” With so many years onstage, she has innumerable acts under her belt; from a drunken showgirl, to her unusual disembodied hand act, to classic balloon numbers and her well-known mermaid performances. She is bold, daring and has an incredible charisma and stage presence which sets her apart from other performers.
