Sunday 12 February 2012, 1-3pm at Circadian Fitness, Mond Buildings, Union Street, Swansea SA1 3DN. £15. Please visit Circadian’s can-can workshop page to pay.
Made famous in the cabarets of Paris, the can-can is a perfect blend of excitement, energy and enthusiasm. This playful and spirited dance has been a firm favourite in Paris since the early 19th century and is a perfect blend of excitement, energy and a certain je ne sais quoi. We will teach you many of the time-honoured and globally adored moves, creating a high- (or not so high) kicking, skirt-swishing, whooping extravaganza. We celebrate the traditional French can-can with the well-known spécialités such as the high-kicking battement, the famous can-can chorus line and of course a flash or two of the derrière!
This class will take you on an energetic journey – step by step, kick by kick and wink by wink. So let your inner cancaneuse kick her way forward and start thinking like a skirt-swishing, leg flashing, whooping extravagant. Come create the Circadian can-can troupe!
With an impressive history of professional can-can dancing, teacher Viva Misadventure has can-canned in Paris cabarets, appeared as a can-can mentor on Gok Wan’s ‘How To Look Good Naked’ TV show and runs her own professional can-can troupe.
Please bring a flared knee-length skirt if you have one (don’t worry if not, we have lots of spares). Remember, you will be kicking and flashing your derrière, so please wear suitable clothes to go underneath your skirt – trousers or big frilly knickers! We recommend you wear supportive dance shoes (trainers or jazz shoes).
Think Dita von Teese, Gypsy Rose Lee and Bettie Page – Viva Misadventure is in Swansea to teach the burlesque staples of peeling, posing and teasing! Slip on your seamed stockings and opera gloves, as we take you through the glamorous world of retro burlesque-striptease, introducing you to the art of ‘tease’, tassel-twirling and the good old bump and grind. We’ll ask you to bring different items of clothing each week, when we teach technique and then incorporate it all into routines, observing the concepts of character and narrative, as well as the bawdy nature of British burlesque. Our classes are guaranteed to make you feel confident and sassy, whisking you into a world of glamour and humour – Swansea, be prepared to realise your alter-ego!
This course is £40 (£35 for Members of Revue Studios). Places are strictly limited to 15 and are open to ladies aged 18+.
This course runs at Swansea’s Revue Studios on Monday nights from Monday 9 January until Monday 13 February from 7-8pm (please arrive by 6.45pm to ensure the class starts on time).
