Burlesque: Steal that Style for Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day upon us, are you all ready for romance? Whether you’re planning a fancy evening out or a saucy night in, why not take some inspiration from the world of burlesque…

Your Valentine has promised to take you out somewhere special, but what is a girl to wear? You can’t go wrong spicing up your evening attire with little burlesque glam (unless you opt to show up at a high-end restaurant wearing only nipple tassels, but we wouldn’t advise that…)

Divine Dresses
From figure-hugging pieces to gorgeous swing dresses, vintage style is still hot, hot, hot! A Google search will bring up a plethora of companies offering a beautiful array of vintage-inspired clothing, so you’re sure to find something to suit your style and figure.

Vivien of Holloway are one of the best known UK vintage reproduction brands and their selection just keeps getting bigger and better each year. Their dresses are available in a wide range of prints and fabrics.

Glamour Bunny  is also a popular brand in the world of burly-q, stocking some gorgeous little numbers which just exude vintage glamour and which work equally well as a curtain-call outfit or for a dinner date.

Amazing Accessories
The key to finishing off your outfit with a little pizzazz is accessories! In burlesque we love to add bits and bobs to our outfit to make the look just that little bit more special. Think fancy hair pieces, miniature hats or pretty flowers.

For gorgeous, handmade hats why not check out Le Hat Noir (pictured above) based in Edinburgh. Or if you fancy something out of the ordinary, check out the insanely popular Pearls & Swine, a firm favourite onstage and at the races!

Or for pretty headpieces and much more, Cherryfox has a delightful selection of pieces for the discerning diva. (If you like the gorgeous purple fascinator pictured right, it’s available now on Cherryfox’s Etsy shop here).

Saucy Shenanigans
If your idea of the perfect Valentine’s date doesn’t involve leaving the house, fear not, as burlesque inspiration can work for you too.

Titillating Tassels
They are the epitome of burlesque… Yup, you guessed it: nipple tassels! Originally invented to protect the modesty of dancers in burlesque in the golden years, they have become synonymous with the modern day art form. Any shape, size, colour or style that you can possibly imagine, we can pretty much guarantee you’ll find it out there on the internet somewhere! From crystals to lace to pvc and sequins, in all colours of the rainbow, nipple tassels or pasties can be made to match any outfit or theme you desire.
Many performers make tassels, including the ABC’s own Daiquiri Dusk.

Sexy Stockings & Suspenders

If you’re going for the classic Dita Von Teese pin-up look for the boudoir, you can’t go wrong with some good old-fashioned stockings and suspenders. Lace-topped, seamed or fishnet, there are so many to choose from! For classic vintage style, check out What Katie Did, one of the UK’s most popular vintage reproduction lingerie specialists.
